The DMV had plans to move their office from Laguna Hills to the Kaleidoscope shopping center located right off Crown Valley Parkway. The ill-conceived scheme was voted down by the Mission Viejo City Council unanimously because Crown Valley Parkway is already one of the most congested city streets in Mission Viejo. Ambulances and firetrucks already have difficulty getting to Mission Hospital now – let alone if thousands of DMV customers and rookie drivers taking their tests were to flood the roads. Additionally, Viejo Elementary School is nearby and schoolchildren walk to and from school, which raised safety concerns with the prospect of uninitiated drivers taking their road test on the streets near the school.
Once the Mission Viejo move was denied, the DMV should have simply renewed its lease at Moulton Plaza in Laguna Hills to continue to serve South Orange County. The closure seems capricious and spiteful.
